What You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all income connected to agricultural land automatically tax-exempt?

No. Only income that fits within the specific statutory definition under Section 2(1A), generally rent/revenue from agricultural land or income from qualifying agricultural operations on it, qualifies for the Section 10(1) exemption; income from a connected but non-qualifying activity is taxable.

Does agricultural income increase the tax rate on other income?

It can, through the partial integration mechanism: agricultural income above a threshold is added to non-agricultural income solely to determine the applicable tax rate on the latter, though the agricultural income itself remains exempt from direct tax.

What evidence is typically needed to support an agricultural income exemption claim?

Land ownership/lease records, cultivation and crop records, and sale or mandi receipts connecting the claimed income to specific agricultural land and produce: the burden of proof rests on the taxpayer claiming the exemption.
